Census Records

We are currently constructing Excel databases for various census records (household, agricultural, and mortality) for towns in Madison County. Completed town Excel files are below. As more are completed, we will begin posting them here for other researchers to access. The original agricultural schedules in the census data are available with a free account through familysearch.com or through an ancestry.com account. The state library in Albany also has microfilm versions of all census records on file.

Instructions: these are direct transcriptions of the census agricultural schedules. Blanks are left blank in the spreadsheets (i.e. not recorded as 0). Unreadable data are usually recorded as blank and highlighted in yellow cells. We suggest cross-checking the spreadsheet with the actual files for unreadable data. We are not responsible for errors or omissions if anyone else is using these data for their own analyses.

Ethics: While these census records are freely available online and through state archives (see above), please respect the names and identities of those involved. For some of us, these are family members and ancestors, and they are all family members and ancestors of friends and neighbors.

Recognition: if you are using these data for your own research, please acknowledge the 1000s of person-hours of work that went into transcribing these. Acknowledgments can be made to the Settlement Ecology Research Group.

Collaboration and co-authorship: We are also always up for collaborations if you have an idea you'd like to pursue and would like to work together.
